Case Study: At a Duracell battery manufacturing plant in Georgia, work-related musculoskeletal disorders accounted for 35 percent of the facility's total recordable injuries and illnesses over a four-year period. In response, the company developed an ergonomics committee with the goal of identifying the causes of these injuries and developing methods to reduce injuries. The committee reviewed OSHA injury logs, and then developed, prioritized, and implemented recommendations for improvements. These improvements included automated unloading and loading stations, redesigned work stations, adjustment of work height, rotation of jobs, and use of anti-fatigue floor mats and ergonomically designed chairs. They also trained their occupational health nurse on medical case management procedures, implemented an Ergonomic Task Force, and provided continued training for all employees. These efforts resulted in a 90 percent reduction in work-related musculoskeletal disorder incident rates and an 81 percent reduction in total accidents.

OSHA Ergonomics: Enforcement states: OSHA has developed industry specific guidelines to provide specific and helpful guidance for abatement to assist employees and employers in minimizing injuries. Even if there are no guidelines specific to your industry, as an employer you still have an obligation under the General Duty Clause, Section 5(a)(1) to keep your workplace free from recognized serious hazards, including ergonomic hazards. OSHA will cite for ergonomic hazards under the General Duty Clause or issue ergonomic hazard letters where appropriate as part of its overall enforcement program.

Refresher training should also occur whenever changes to the worksite, equipment, or tasks render previous training obsolete.
